Canned tomatoes and nutrition

There’s no debate about the power of plant foods like fruits and vegetables. In order to help counteract oxidative damage from today’s lifestyles, we know that a diet rich in antioxidants is needed. Plant foods contain a huge range of special protective components called phytochemicals that act as antioxidants to protect different cells of your body. The sure bet is to fill your diet with plenty of richly pigmented plant foods. Start with vibrant, multicoloured fruits and vegetables like brilliant red tomatoes.

Antioxidant advantage

Tomatoes are vibrant red fruits packed with the anti-oxidant lycopene. Lycopene offers a host of benefits including heart health. Used for centuries as a staple in Mediterranean cuisine, interestingly the addition of a drizzle of olive oil greatly enhances their lycopene antioxidant absorption. And the canning process of tomatoes has been shown to aid in the absorption of lycopene as well. What great news for pasta lovers!

Nutrients maintained

The Australian Government Analytical Laboratories (AGAL) have undertaken major
nutritional studies on canned food using methods specified by the Australia New
Zealand Food Authority. It found that there are no practical differences between
the nutritional value of fresh and canned foods. In addition to being nutritionally comparable to their fresh and frozen counterparts, canned foods provide the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients we need at a very competitive cost.

Meal ideas

An all round magic meal starter, canned tomatoes can be used as a base for curries, pasta, hot pots and even spread on pita bread to make pizzas.
